Friday, Friday, Friday! Finally
I watched this video(click to watch) of Michael Pollan on the Daily Show today and thought I’d share. Pollan just released a new book, Food Rules(only $5.00 on Amazon!), which is a great guide if you are embarking on a whole foods, nutrious lifestyle! In this interview, Pollan discusses how America’s food system is basically creating patients for the health care industry. Truer words have never been spoken. Our government subsidizes a limited number of crops (corn, soybeans, wheat) that allows companies to create mass amounts of processed meat, refined grains, and other products, most with a high fructose corn syrup base, for a cheap price. I’m not just talking oreos and sodas, this includes your diet frozen meals and 100-calories packs too. These products are full of empty calories with no nutritional benefits. As a college student myself, I know what it’s like to live on a budget. But when it comes to my health, I’m not willing to compromise.
When I talk to friends about eating healthy, I usually hear the same excuse-it’s just too expensive. And you really can’t argue with that fact. Indeed, it is cheaper to live off the dollar menu and microwave meals than organic produce and whole grains…at least in the short term. I like to compare the “high” costs of organics, natural products, free range eggs, whole grains, etc. to the high costs that processed foods have on our health. Most of the diseases–obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, strokes– that have caused our health care costs to soar through the roof can all be prevented by eating a nutrional plant-based diet. When I think about the fact that I have only one life to live, it’s not a hard to decision to splurge on real food. Paying a few extra bucks to eat healthy now, can prevent me from paying thousands on health care costs a few years down the road. How much is a healthy life worth to you?
